The Kansas City Chiefs are coming off of another AFC Championship season with many of the core pieces of the puzzle on both sides of the ball set to return for the 2025 campaign.
While there aren't anywhere near as many questions facing the Chiefs as there are for other teams across the NFL, Andy Reid and the coaching staff need to figure out who will fill a hole on the offensive line in order to help keep Patrick Mahomes upright. With Joe Thuney being traded to the Chicago Bears this past month, Kansas City has a decision to make regarding who will line up alongside two-time All-Pro center Creed Humphrey.
At this time, the frontrunners for the job are Kingsley Suamataia and Mike Caliendo. Even though Suamataia spent the bulk of the 2024 season working as a left tackle, the 2024 second-round pick has a real chance to make the move to guard on a full-time basis and has impressed Humphrey with the work he has put in at that position to this point.
"Yeah, he's an extremely talented player, first and foremost, and he strives to be really good every single day," Humphrey said of Suamataia, via AtoZSports.com. "You know, he shows up with the right attitude, he shows up with the right mindset. So with a guy like him, with how talented he is, and his work ethic, things usually turn out to be pretty good, so we're excited for him."
After starting at left tackle in the first two games of the 2024 season for the Chiefs, Suamataia was used as a reserve for the remainder of the year. In Kansas City's final game of the regular season, Suamataia saw time at left guard and showed enough promise for the Chiefs to reach this point in the offseason with the former BYU Cougars standout as one of the primary options at the position moving forward.
Even though the decision as to which of the two will line up next to Humphrey on the offensive line will come from the coaching staff, the All-Pro has clearly been impressed with what Suamataia brings to the table and the ceiling he has as a player.
