The Kansas City Chiefs are less than a month away from the NFL Draft and several playmakers will be appearing on their big board. The Chiefs had another strong year, posting a 15-2 record in the regular season and making it to their third straight Super Bowl. But after coming up shy in their quest for a three-peat, they have several needs heading into next season.
One area the Chiefs need to improve is their cast of playmakers. Xavier Worthy had a strong rookie year, and Marquis “Hollywood” Brown re-signed this offseason. But Kansas City is reportedly looking for more and could target a player from Patrick Mahomes’ alma mater to make it happen.
Chiefs Reportedly Interested in Texas Tech TE for NFL Draft
According to The Draft Network’s Justin Melo, the Chiefs are reportedly one of six teams interested in Texas Tech tight end Jalin Conyers. Conyers is coming off a strong performance at last month’s scouting combine, posting a time of 6.94 seconds in the three-cone drill and 4.27 seconds in the shuttle drill. He also finished in the top five of the vertical (35.45”) and broad jumps (10-foot-1) to post a 9.24 relative athletic score.
Conyers spent his first three seasons at Arizona State but spent his final year of eligibility with the Red Raiders. His lone season in Lubbock resulted in modest numbers, catching 30 passes, 320 yards, and five touchdowns and was a second-team All-Big 12 conference selection after breaking his foot before spring practice.
Lance Zierlein’s scouting report on NFL.com says that Conyers has the side and ball skills to be a receiving threat in the NFL but needs to work on his route running and quickness to make that happen. Zierlein also adds that Conyers spent time out of the Wildcat formation at Arizona State but needs to improve as a run-blocker.
The Chiefs are in the market for a tight end even as Travis Kelce returns for next season. The 35-year-old was still productive, catching 97 passes for 823 yards and three touchdowns but his future beyond 2025 is unknown with Noah Gray and Jared Wiley behind him.
Melo lists the Dallas Cowboys, San Francisco 49ers, Houston Texans, New Orleans Saints, and Detroit Lions as teams interested in Conyers. But as the No. 14 tight end and 199th prospect overall on Pro Football Focus’s big board, Conyers looks more like a late-round flier than a first-round pick. This could give the Chiefs the opportunity for a late-round gem and another dynamic playmaker to land in Kansas City.
