After seeing the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills make trades for star wide receivers (Davante Adams and Amari Cooper) last week, the Kansas City Chiefs finally decided to get involved in the trade action on Wednesday morning.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Chiefs acquired star receiver DeAndre Hopkins from the Tennessee Titans in exchange for a conditional fourth-round pick. Hopkins has been linked to the Chiefs in the weeks leading up to the trade deadline after Kansas City lost second-year WR Rashee Rice to a season-ending knee injury.

The 32-year-old Hopkins is the perfect acquisition for a banged-up Chiefs’ WR room despite his down 2024 season with the Titans (15 receptions for 173 yards and a touchdown).

In their Week 7 win over the San Francisco 49ers, the Chiefs saw Juju Smith-Schuster exit the game after he re-aggravating his hamstring injury, putting KC in a tough spot at the WR position. Based on that information, Kansas City plans to get the veteran wideout on the field as soon as possible.

According to Underdog Fantasy Senior NFL Reporter James Palmer, the Chiefs’ goal is to have Hopkins play on Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders. Palmer adds the team will know by the end of the week exactly what the veteran receiver can do.

This is a bold and ambitious plan by Kansas City as their offensive system isn’t the easiest to figure out. Therefore, the optimal move for the Chiefs would have been to acquire a player who has played there before.

That being said, the Chiefs didn’t have that opportunity as they needed to bring a game-changer at the receiver spot.

Based on his experience in the league, Hopkins might not have half of Kansas City’s playbook down pact by Sunday. But he has the skills and abilities to do what Patrick Mahomes needs from him, which might be just enough to help against the Raiders.
