Chiefs' Super Bowl Chances Get Even Better After Major Injury Blow to Top Contender
By Joe Summers
The Chiefs are closing in on the No. 1 seed in the AFC after beating the Browns in Week 15, though they're no longer Super Bowl favorites given the struggles in the second half of the season.
In an unfortunate bit of fortunate news, the presumptive favorites just suffered a massive injury. We know Patrick Mahomes is dealing with an ankle problem but now, the Lions may be without star RB David Montgomery.
With a remarkable 25 rushing TDs over the last two seasons, Montgomery has emerged as one of the best red-zone weapons in the NFL. Without him, Detroit's offense will look a lot different.
Chiefs Get Super Bowl Boost After Big Lions Injury
The Lions still have one of the best offenses in the league and are legitimate threats to win the Super Bowl. Their backfield loses some juice without Montgomery though, and they have limited time to get another back up to speed.
Kansas City would only face Detroit in the Super Bowl obviously. Montgomery would likely be back on the field by then, though the Lions could suffer an upset before we get to the big game.
Among all of the NFC contenders, the Lions probably represent the largest threat. The Chiefs lost to them in Week 1 last season and head coach Dan Campbell's bold strategies could lead to a Lombardi Trophy.
Jahmyr Gibbs is still one of the better running backs in the league. The Lions will be fine overall and have significant issues defensively, which is a larger issue when looking to the games that truly matter.
As it stands, the Bills are FanDuel Sportsbook's Super Bowl favorites at +400 after beating the Lions, who are +480. The Chiefs are fourth at +600 with the Eagles sitting at +480 as well. Any Kansas City fan knows these odds are ridiculous, and today's news only confirms that fact.
