The Kansas City Chiefs were able to make it back to the Super Bowl but their run wasn’t perfect. While a 15-2 record looks good on paper, the Chiefs faced several shortcomings including a lack of options at wide receivers, injuries in the secondary and a gaping hole at left tackle. The Chiefs were proactive filling those holes but they still came back to haunt them in a Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
A few months after the season-ending loss, the Chiefs are still picking up the pieces. While they’ve made some moves to bring talent in, others have been left searching for new homes. One of those veterans found a new team on Tuesday evening and it’s the result of a starter that failed to do his job in Kansas City but hoping for better luck in San Francisco.
49ers Sign Former Failed Chiefs Signing D.J. Humphries
According to KPRC’s Aaron Wilson, the San Francisco 49ers have agreed to a deal with former Chiefs offensive tackle D.J. Humphries. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but the pact is meant to add depth with a player who didn’t do well after signing with the Chiefs last season.

The Chiefs’ issues at left tackle were well documented as Kingsley Suamataia and Wanya Morris struggled through the opening months of the season. With Kansas City scrambling, it settled to sign Humphries as a free agent once he recovered from his torn ACL.
The results weren’t promising as Humphries was limited to 91 snaps due to hamstring injury. He wasn’t good when he made it onto the field either, allowing 11 quarterback pressures and three sacks on 69 pass-blocking snaps.
Kansas City was able to patch the hole by shifting Joe Thuney to left tackle but it wasn’t enough to stop the Eagles from recording six sacks during the Super Bowl. The Chiefs gave Jaylon Moore a two-year, $30 million contract in free agency and doubled down on their tackle depth by selecting Ohio State offensive tackle Josh Simmons with the 32nd overall pick in the NFL Draft.
Those moves made Humphries expendable and the 31-year-old will now try to revive his career in San Francisco. While he’ll be playing behind Trent Williams and Colton McKitvitz, Chiefs fans (and Patrick Mahomes) can breathe a sigh of relief that they didn’t give him one more opportunity in Kansas City.
