The Kansas City Chiefs are off and running with preseason competition, having lost to the Arizona Cardinals 20-17 on Saturday. There were some positives and obviously a lot of negatives, yet the point of an initial contest is merely to evaluate the depth pieces on the roster.

Aside from a couple of concerning injuries, the Chiefs made it out unscathed. Overall, it was a victory given the injury report. Nonetheless, there were lessons to be learned from a long-term perspective.

In an effort to recoup some value in the backfield, the organization signed a local running back standout who could make an impact down the line.

Chiefs Sign Local Star After 1st Preseason Game

The organization signed a local standout, defensive end Nate Matlack, on Monday ahead of the day's practice.

Matlack, an Olathe East star who has garnered a local following, is a name to watch moving forward. He spent time at both Kansas State and Pittsburgh, compiling 14.5 sacks during his collegiate career as a four-year starter. This isn't someone who should be expected to make the final roster, though he's worth watching nonetheless.

At the very least, Matlack could be a practice squad player or someone who could push for a depth position down the line. There's no reason to write him off this early, especially considering the competition at the defensive end position.

Charles Omenihu, George Karlaftis, Mike Danna, and company are obviously secure in their roles. The question becomes about depth pieces, which is where Matlack could make a name for himself. There's no expectation that he'll carve out a roster spot, yet it's still possible. Obviously, local fans are rooting for him. It's unlikely yet still something to root for.

At this point, fans shouldn't expect much. Matlack is a fun story, but has no real chance to make the roster. Perhaps he changes the front office's mind, but for now, everyone should assume we'll soon hear news that he's been cut.
