The story of the Kansas City Chiefs training camp thus far has been the mounting concerns at the receiver position. If Rashee Rice is allowed to take the field, all is well, and the Chiefs have no reason for concern. However, considering the gravity of the off-the-field concerns, it seemed very probable that at least a 4-6 game suspension would be handed down by the league office.
With Rice expected to be off the board, Kansas City simply lacks the depth to survive any more injuries. Unfortunately, there are already two key players dealing with concerns.
Xavier Worthy was dealing with what was believed to be a concussion in what is by far the most concerning story to emerge from Chiefs' camp. While there is plenty of time to heal, it is an injury that requires a level of gravity. However, Worthy has been able to return with the team, clarifying the injury as fluid buildup.
Hollywood Brown has gone down as well, and the Chiefs are scrambling to find bodies to help make it through the camp and preseason. This forced the Chiefs to make another move on Friday, signing undrafted free agent Key'Shawn Smith.
We have signed free agents CB Ajani Carter, CB Azizi Hearn, and WR Key'Shawn Smith.

Chiefs Sign Undrafted Rookie Receiver Key'Shawn Smith
Smith spent his first three years with Miami before entering the portal and spending his last two years with SMU. It turned out to be a wise decision, with the receiver enjoying the most productive season of his college career. The current Chief finished his final college season with 527 receiving yards and 5 touchdowns. While this isn't elite production, it is enough for Smith to earn a look at the next level. This is all the signing is coming without strings or expectations.
The receiver isn't expected to play as he is at the bottom of the depth chart at the position. Barring an incredible camp and preseason run, there simply isn't a path for Smith onto the roster. With this in mind, it is an important next few weeks are important for a player who is being handed an opportunity to keep his hopes of making the jump to the next level alive.
Kansas City has continually made these types of moves over the last two weeks, exploring a number of depth options. While this is understandable, one could easily argue the correct approach at receiver is going out and signing either Amari Cooper or Keenan Allen. Either accomplished veteran would give the franchise a bit of security as they continue to deal with frustrating injuries and await the league's decision on Rice's future.
