The Chiefs wasted no time in making a surprise signing following Sunday's dreadful loss to the Bills, adding former Patriots second-round pick Tyquan Thornton to the practice squad on Monday.

Thornton, who was just recently released by New England, has only four catches for 47 yards on the season but is regarded as a dangerous speedster with significant potential.

A talented playmaker out of Baylor, Thornton represents the exact kind of low-cost, high-upside swing that general manager Brett Veach is famous for.

New England has never been known for its ability to draft receivers, though Thornton may be a diamond in the rough for Kansas City. He's just two years removed from being a second-round selection and is likely an immediate upgrade over Skyy Moore.

At the very least, Thornton has actually caught a pass this season.

His rookie campaign was Thornton's most successful, catching 22 passes for 247 yards and a pair of TDs. That's not much, but one must consider the dumpster fire Bill Belichick created on his way out. The Patriots are one of the NFL's worst organizations over the last five seasons, giving Thornton some wiggle room to emerge from New England's shackles.

During his time at Baylor, Thornton hauled in 143 passes for 2,242 yards and 19 TDs. He's a bonafide downfield threat with a similar profile to guys like Mecole Hardman and Xavier Worthy, albeit with less production.

Regardless, the move is a signal that Kansas City is serious about improving the wide receiver room before the playoffs.
