The Kansas City Chiefs have incredible stability at the quarterback position starting with the best in the league in Patrick Mahomes. While the starter rarely misses time, the Chiefs opted to bring further stability bringing in former rival and starting option Gardner Minshew. The backup spent last season as the starting option for the Las Vegas Raiders. Things might not have gone according to plan in Las Vegas, however, the Chiefs now have the advantage of a backup with starting experience.

Add in third-string quarterback Bailey Zappe and there is little question the Chiefs have the needed depth at the position. Still, it can never hurt to take a look at further options and that is exactly the approach the Chiefs should take. Former Atlanta Falcons and Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Desmond Ridder remains a free agent. This is for good reason when you look at the tape the starter has put together.

The Chiefs Should Take a Look at Desmond Ridder

Ridder has been a complete mess when handed starting chances unable to put anything close to a capable season together. Still, it cannot hurt to give the quarterback a training camp invite and see if anything can be done to correct the issues. All of the struggles that haunt Ridder are mental with the quarterback having all of the needed physical tools to play the position.

Still, there isn't enough talent there to think that bringing Ridder into camp is going to change anything. Rather, you're giving the best coach and quarterback in the league a chance to attempt to work a bit of magic with a failed starter. If it doesn't work there is no reason for concern with that being the expectation from the moment the invite is issued.

Bringing Ridder into camp is simply about seeing if there is any reason to believe the quarterback can be an upgrade over Zappe. If that fails as expected there is no judgment or issue with the Chiefs quickly turning the page.

While the flip side of this is the fact that bringing in Ridder invites a bit of competition and gives you a chance to find a third option with a bit of mobility and a better arm, it is incredibly unlikely that this proves to be the case due to Ridder's lack of production. However, the Chiefs simply have nothing to lose by attempting to move with the stability already at the top of the depth chart.
