The Kansas City Chiefs are making their final preparations for the NFL Draft and fans are excited to see who they will select with the 31st overall pick. The Chiefs have several needs in this year’s draft including defensive tackle, offensive tackle and running back and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Kansas City try to land an impact player at the end of the first round.
But if you’re thinking about staying up to see who the Chiefs wind up picking, you may be disappointed as a new rumor suggests Kansas City could be involved in a big draft night trade.
Chiefs Considering Trading Out of the First Round of NFL Draft
According to SI's Albert Breer, the Chiefs are one of several teams that have explored trading out of the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday night. The Chiefs hold the second to last pick in the first round, meaning that it could wind up being one of the biggest trades of the night if they choose to move down.
“Among the teams that have explored moves down late in the first round, into second round – Broncos, Steelers, Packers, Vikings, Rams, Lions, Chiefs and Eagles. If someone is looking to come up for a QB from the top of [the second round], they’ll be able to find a trade partner.”

A team to watch could be the Cleveland Browns. The Browns are projected to take Colorado star Travis Hunter with the second overall pick. But their quarterback situation is in question with Deshaun Watson out for the season and Kenny Pickett and Joe Flacco as the current quarterbacks on the roster.
The New York Giants could also be in the market for a quarterback if they pass on a signal caller with the third overall pick. The Giants have been linked to Shedeur Sanders during the pre-draft process but this year’s class seems to be up in the air and it wouldn’t be surprising if Sanders or Jaxon Dart of Ole Miss slides toward the end of the first round behind Cam Ward, who is expected to go to the Tennessee Titans with the No. 1 overall pick.
No matter who the team is, the Chiefs are in a position to cash in. Without an immediate need on the roster, Kansas City can sit back and field calls as teams attempt to trade into the first round to get the fifth-year option on a rookie contract. If that happens, the Chiefs can add to their eight selections in this weekend’s draft and make one of the biggest deals in the first round on Thursday night.
