We are less than two weeks away from the 2025 NFL Draft. Armed with eight selections (four in the top 100), the Chiefs are looking to bolster their roster for next season and beyond. The widespread consensus is that the Chiefs would target an offensive tackle and a defensive tackle early in the draft. According to one recent report, however, it is growing less and less likely that Kansas City would go for an offensive lineman with their first-round pick.
The Athletic's Nate Taylor looked at draft guru Dane Brugler's draft guide and identified key takeaways. One of those takeaways was to not expect the Chiefs to draft a left tackle with their No. 31 overall pick.
"They will have a different left tackle to start Week 1 in 2025, too. But looking at the prospects at the position this year, it’s even more understandable why the Chiefs signed Moore in free agency."Nate Taylor, The Athletic
Brugler gave a first or second-round grade to six left tackles on his big board. Will Campbell, Armand Membou, and Josh Conerly aren't expected to be available for the Chiefs. Per Taylor, Ohio State's Josh Simmons is the Chiefs' best option, but not only does he have injury concerns, but he may also be gone before KC is on the clock.
This increases the likelihood of the Chiefs beginning the season with new addition Jaylon Moore as their starting left tackle.
There is obviously a chance the Chiefs could trade up in the draft and land one of the top tackle prospects. What seems more likely, however, is that GM Brett Veach would target a lower-level tackle prospect in Day 2.
The Chiefs also have immediate needs at running back and tight end, but it's hard to imagine Veach using a first-rounder on an RB or a TE. This means that a defensive tackle may be the most likely position Kansas City would target first. We will find out whether that is the case on Thursday, April 24.
