The Kansas City Chiefs are facing a major offseason thanks to numerous pending free agents they have. This year's class is highlighted by guys like Nick Bolton, Trey Smith (who has since been franchise tagged), and Justin Reid, though it's never too soon to plan.

Young stars such as Trent McDuffie and George Karlaftis will soon require extensions, but one of the most interesting names to watch is 25-year-old running back Isiah Pacheco. Originally a seventh-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, 2025 is the final year on his deal so a theoretical extension could come at any time.

That said, the Chiefs reportedly don't intend to offer Pacheco prior to the new campaign.

Chiefs Don't Intend to Offer Contract Extension to Isiah Pacheco Before Next Season

According to Tony Pauline of Sportskeeda, Kansas City will enter the 2025 season without giving Pacheco a contract extension. The organization instead wants him to prove he's healthy and can return to his prior form, a logical decision given Pacheco's recent struggles.

He was limited to six games, rushing 83 times for 310 yards and one TD. This was the second consecutive year he missed time due to injury, and Pacheco was an afterthought in the offense even when he came back, getting just 13 total playoff carries.

Kareem Hunt came off the street and quickly took over the backfield, proving to be a superior option to Pacheco. This was especially true in short-yardage situations, where Pacheco has traditionally struggled. With an exciting class of running back prospects in the upcoming draft, it feels probable that the Chiefs will pick someone to challenge Pacheco moving forward.

Chiefs GM Brett Veach typically prepares a year ahead, making this a key time to find a potential Pacheco replacement should the team elect not to re-sign him. Pacheco has been an important part of this team, though his best days may be already behind him.

That makes this year a pivotal one for the young player. Here's hoping he takes advantage of the opportunity ahead.
