The Kansas City Chiefs brought in experience behind quarterback Patrick Mahomes this offseason, adding both Gardner Minshew and Bailey Zappe. Minshew was the obvious backup, with Zappe's role unclear, waiting on preseason and camp to determine his standing with the organization.
There was a level of hope that, perhaps under head coach Andy Reid, the 26-year-old QB might become a surprise contributor or even a trade chip. Frustrating preseason results quickly put these hopes to bed, as he went 15-of-27 (55.6%) in the pocket for 104 passing yards, two interceptions, and a putrid 33.6 passer rating in three preseason outings.
It isn't just a lack of consistency from Zappe, but the fact that the former Pats starter appeared constantly overwhelmed. With how long the quarterback has been in the league, looking this awful in the preseason is a major red flag. One that has left the Chiefs with no option but to part ways with Zappe for nothing in return. There simply isn't going to be a team in the league that even entertains giving up anything of note.
Zappe has made sure that the only path that Kansas City has left is turning the page and trusting Minshew if anything were to go wrong. While this was always the plan, there was a level of hope that under Reid, the struggling quarterback could take advantage of his starting experience.
Chiefs QB Bailey Zappe Imploded Throughout 2025 Camp and Preseason
It will be interesting to see what is next for Zappe with the quarterback continuing to implode his value. There was a short time during his stint with the Patriots when it seemed there was a bright future as a backup ahead. The ability to step in for Mac Jones and show a fearless level of attack was at least a wildcard to bring in behind your starter.
Now, it is a question mark if you even want to add Zappe as your emergency option. At least with other unknowns, you have a potential upside or an interesting project. With Zappe, you understand exactly what you have and pray that you're never forced in a situation to give the limited backup meaningful game reps.
With this in mind, the Chiefs turning the page is the obvious move, and Zappe has left not only zero trade value but little reason for free agent interest. It is fair to begin to wonder if the quarterback's career is nearing its end. No question, it has come to an end for the Chiefs with superior options remaining in free agency and within the team's own roster.
