Chiefs Provide D.J. Humphries Injury Update Before Season Finale
By Cem Yolbulan
With the No. 1 seed in the AFC clinched, the Kansas City Chiefs are not playing meaningful football for a couple of weeks. After a grueling recent schedule, that is the best possible scenario for the Chiefs.
Rust is an obvious concern but the Chiefs are understandably prioritizing getting healthy for the playoffs. Throughout the week, Chiefs fans will be more interested in injury updates on key contributors than preparations for Sunday's clash against the Broncos.
Head coach Andy Reid provided the first injury update on injured players like Isiah Pacheco and D.J. Humphries on Monday. Per Chiefs insider Pete Sweeney, Reid said that Humphries' rehab was going well but he refused to make any promises about his availability.
Chiefs News: D.J. Humphries' Availability in Week 18 Up in the Air
Humphries only suited up for one game after signing with the Chiefs mid-season. After starting against the Chargers and playing 60 offensive snaps, the experienced offensive lineman suffered a hamstring injury and hasn't been available for the past three weeks.
In his absence, Joe Thuney has slid to left tackle and performed admirably. Mike Caliendo has filled in at left guard and his performance has been less impressive. In the last two games, Caliendo received a 40.2 and a 34.2 PFF grades, respectively, creating questions about his viability in the postseason.
Humphries' return would move Thuney back to left guard and make the Chiefs' offensive line more formidable and experienced.
The former Cardinals starter was a Pro Bowler in 2021, earning himself a three-year, $66.6 million contract extension. He wasn't able to replicate that success since then and was released in the 2024 offseason. If the 31-year-old can get back to his old self, he could be a major boost for the Chiefs heading into the postseason.
