"My family and I are deeply saddened by the passing of Jim Irsay. Jim's career in the National Football League spanned more than forty years, and in that time he became a trusted voice on league matters and a fixture in the local community of Indianapolis," Hunt wrote. "He was a determined leader, a generous philanthropist, and at heart, a passionate football fan. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Irsay family and the entire Indianapolis Colts organization."
Originally joining the franchise in 1984 as a vice president and general manager, Irsay has been synonymous with Colts football for decades. Indianapolis penned a touching message in their own right, and it's a moment for fans of all teams to recognize the people behind the game that we love.
"We are devastated to announce our beloved Owner & CEO, Jim Irsay, passed away peacefully in his sleep this afternoon," Colts chief operating officer Pete Ward said in a statement.
