Chiefs pass-rusher on short leash heading into 2026 season

He has to step up.

The Kansas City Chiefs entered the offseason with a pretty clear goal. They wanted to revamp the defense, both by adding younger and cheaper players and guys who were a better fit for Steve Spagnuolo's system.

While that's great news for the Chiefs and their fans, it's not necessarily the case for some of their players. Notably, that includes Felix Anudike-Uzomah, who has failed to make much of an impact since his arrival in Kansas City,

And now that the Chiefs used such a valuable second-round draft pick to get R Mason Thomas, Anudike-Uzomah will be under much more pressure. He has to step up, or he might lose his spot on the rotation to an unproven rookie.

Felix Anudike-Uzomah may not even make the Chiefs roster

Anudike-Uzomah has failed to live up to the expectations. The former first-round pick has struggled with injuries, and while he's just 23 and could still turn the corner as a former Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, availability will always be the best ability.

In 34 career games, Anudike-Uzomah has logged 41 total tackles (24 solo), 14 QB hits, and just three sacks. Then, a preseason hamstring injury kept him on the shelf for the entirety of the 2025 campaign, and with the Chiefs taking Thomas, they might be running out of patience with Anudike-Uzomah.

The Chiefs also committed a lot of money to George Karlaftis, but he hasn't exactly lived up to that deal, either. Chris Jones is aging, and this team's inability to put pressure on the quarterback could doom them next season, as it did this past one.

They averaged just 2.1 sacks per game in 2025, which was tied for 22nd in the entire league. Even if Spagnuolo doesn't have the most aggressive pass rush, that's just not sustainable for a team with Super Bowl aspirations.

Granted, trusting a rookie to turn things around might not always work, and R Mason Thomas is far from a finished product. He has to prove that he's ready to make an impact in training camp, and the Chiefs may take things slowly with him.

Still, the Chiefs are off the hook with Anudike-Uzomah's contract as they can cut him without taking any dead money, according to Over The Cap. All told, if the rookie Thomas shows signs of promise early and FAU fails to keep up after missing the whole season with an injury, he may not even make the 53-man roster.
