The Kansas City Chiefs were understandably hesitant to make any major coaching changes coming off their third straight Super Bowl appearance. However, there was no question that the fan base remained unenthused with offensive coordinator Matt Nagy. Even with head coach Andy Reid calling the offense, almost everything that has gone wrong is increasingly placed on the shoulders of the OC. Much of this is likely because Chiefs Kingdom has seen how great this offense can be when it is perfectly balanced with an offensive coordinator who is unafraid to hold players accountable.

The Chiefs never appeared to consider an offseason change, opting to stick blindly with Nagy, a mistake the franchise is now paying the price for. The lack of consideration resulted in Kansas City now being stuck with an OC who isn't a fit and has proven incapable of providing the changes the offense so obviously needs.

Reid is known as a player's coach and needs someone to help offset this, willing to play the "bad cop" to his affable nature. Instead, the Chiefs opted to bring back Nagy and are now paying the price. The offense is flat, and there seems to be zero clear identity or sense of urgency from a group that now sits at .500 on the season.

Chiefs Made Obvious Offseason Mistake Bringing Back Struggling OC Matt Nagy

Regardless of who, the point remains that the Chiefs can no longer ignore what a glaring mistake the franchise made bringing back Nagy. It has translated into a lackluster offensive attack, and in the season's two biggest games, the Chiefs barely managed to reach 20 points. Scoring 21 points against a questionable Buffalo Bills defense and only 19 points against the Denver Broncos.

While the offensive line has improved, it is a reminder of how last season ended in complete and utter disarray on offense. A big piece of the blame for this should fall on Nagy, who has seen the offense consistently regress since taking over as the Chiefs' offensive coordinator. This would seemingly demand a change even if you're consistently reaching the Super Bowl.

Instead, Kansas City allowed Nagy to return and is now starting to pay the price as the season is slipping away. There is still plenty of time to right the ship and address the issues haunting the offense, but there is no question that the 2026 offseason must provide something different. Bringing back Nagy was a mistake, one that has become increasingly glaring and left the Chiefs with no choice but to make an offseason change. One that gives the Chiefs offense a better chance of correcting course and returning Patrick Mahomes to the best version of himself.

Nagy appears to inspire nothing but apathy, with the offense lacking a clear identity or course to correcting its current issues. This is a clear offseason failure, and the bill is now coming due.

An important characteristic of being a leader is anticipation, and a piece of this should've been opting to move on from Nagy before the 2025 season kicked off. A move that would likely have saved the Chiefs from their current headache and unquestionably would've put the offense in a better position.

Reid needs a balance that Nagy has not shown he can bring, and there is no question the franchise is now in a bind. One that cannot be fixed until the 2026 offseason, with it being far too late to make a coaching change at this stage of the season. Ultimately, leaving fans uneasy as the Chiefs remain in an unfamiliar position, badly needing to put together a late-season run.
