With Week 1 mostly in the books, the Kansas City Chiefs are turning the page and getting ready for their Week 2 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, who beat them soundly in Super Bowl 59.
There will be a lot of anticipation and excitement surrounding the Super Bowl rematch as it's also KC’s home opener. After losing to the Chargers in Week 1, the Chiefs can’t afford to go 0-2 to start the 2025 campaign.
However, Chiefs fans aren’t just focused on the Eagles, as their attention is also on the health of second-year wide receiver Xavier Worthy. Worthy reportedly sustained a dislocated shoulder in the first quarter of Friday night’s game against the Chargers.
The Chiefs cannot afford not to have Worthy on the field for multiple weeks, as they are already without third-year wide receiver Rashee Rice (six-game suspension). On Monday, head coach Andy Reid provided an update on Worthy, but he didn’t give much on a timeline or if he’ll play in Week 2.
Chiefs Taking It Day by Day with Xavier Worthy Following Shoulder Injury
“I know Xavier is the big question. He’s rehabbing and working his shoulder. We’ll just see where it goes, day-by-day here. We’ll see where we end up,” Reid said to reporters via Matt McMullen.
As you can imagine, Chiefs fans weren’t exactly pleased with Reid’s update or lack thereof. The only thing we can go off is the media reports, which aren’t too promising. Since the Chiefs play on Sunday instead of Friday this week, we should get an initial report on Wednesday, which will be the first sign of Worthy’s availability.
If the young wide receiver is limited or logs a DNP between Wednesday and Friday, he likely won’t be able to play. That said, the Chiefs have to operate as if he might not play, which means we could see a lot of Hollywood Brown, Juju Smith-Schuster, and Tyquan Thornton.
Brown led all KC’s receivers with a game-high 10 receptions for 99 yards. The veteran wideout also had a ridiculous 16 targets. Meanwhile, Juju Smith-Schuster was second on the team in receiving with five receptions (five targets) for 55 yards.
Lastly, Thornton only had two receptions (four targets) for 41 yards, but it appears he could be that vertical deep threat for KC’s option as Mahomes took a shot down the field early in Week 1’s loss.
Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see if we get any concrete updates over the coming days about Worthy’s status and injury.
