The Kansas City Chiefs have not looked like the offensive juggernaut that fans have grown accustomed to seeing through the opening two weeks of the 2025 NFL season.
Unfortunately, despite returning to practice, Xavier Worthy will not be able to be the spark the Chiefs are looking for in Week 3, as he was officially ruled out on Saturday afternoon, and that could lead to some serious long-term issues for the defending AFC champs.
With a non-existent rushing attack, coupled with top of the depth chart wide receivers being sidelined due to suspensions for off-field incidents or injuries that have popped up at the worst time, Kansas City badly needs a jolt to kickstart its offense and save its season before it slips away.
Chiefs' Xavier Worthy Missing Week 3 Puts More Pressure on Mahomes
Kansas City badly needs to pick up a win against the New York Giants to avoid having to go on a historic run only to qualify for the playoffs. Four teams have made the postseason since 1990 after losing their first three games of the year. Not having Worthy in the lineup for, essentially, the third straight week only puts much more pressure on the shoulders of Patrick Mahomes.
Through two games, Mahomes has completed 26 passes to Chiefs wide receivers. While that doesn't seem like a number to be concerned about, the fact that 15 of those receptions were made by Hollywood Brown paints a much different picture about the state of Kansas City's offense. Being that dependent on a single wideout is not a recipe for success in today's NFL, and Andy Reid knows it.
With Worthy missing another game due to the shoulder injury he suffered following a collision with Travis Kelce, and Rashee Rice suspended through Week 6, the Chiefs could find themselves in a spot where they need to seriously consider making a trade only to provide Mahomes with enough weapons on offense to be less predictable than this group has become.
While the All-Pro quarterback has donned his Superman cape plenty of times before, asking him to do so again and carry this team out of the basement of the AFC West by himself is too tall of an order. If Kansas City cannot get Worthy healthy and back in the lineup by next week, the Chiefs will have some difficult decisions to make regardless of whether they win or lose this Sunday night.
