One of the reasons that the Kansas City Chiefs opted to bring back offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was for needed accountability. There is no question that there was a sense of predictability and contentment over the last three years that Bieniemy wouldn't stand for. The veteran coach doesn't hesitate to call out failures, whether you're all-time great Patrick Mahomes or the final receiver on the team's depth chart; the standard is the standard. Chiefs fans were given a reminder of this last week when Bieniemy commented on receiver Xavier Worthy.
Reported by A to Z Sports, Charles Goldman, Bieniemy said, "He's still got a long way to go, but so far, so good." This was after the OC spent time talking about getting more familiar with Kansas City's new pieces and praising the talent of Worthy. Clearly, Bieniemy is impressed, but he made it clear the team was far from where they wanted him to be just yet.
If there is one coach capable of unlocking Worthy's full potential and utilizing his elite speed, it is Bieniemy. While the coordinator has a lot on his plate, there will be a special interest in Worthy with the pass catcher possibly starting the season as Kansas City's primary target due to the never-ending drama around Rashee Rice.
Eric Bieniemy making expectations for Xavier Worthy breakout Chiefs season clear
Bieniemy is pointing out that he is impressed with Worthy while making it clear the team has a long way to go. This is a welcome change in attitude and speaks to the accountability and active search for improvement that the coach brings. Focusing a lot of this on Worthy would be a welcome change and perhaps give the Chiefs their best chance of finding a star target in the pass-catcher.
For Worthy, he's coming off a frustrating season after playing through an injury that he suffered in Week 1. He never really got a chance to find his footing. As unfortunate as this might be, it does hopefully allow the 23-year-old to take Bieniemy's coaching to heart, as well as receivers' coach Chad O'Shea
It will be interesting to watch as the summer continues, how much the new offensive coaching staff is able to improve Worthy's game and set him up to get the most out of the 2026 season. One that could help the receiver take a leap into stardom due to the clear target opportunity and a coaching staff in place that will hand the receiver this chance.
