The Kansas City Chiefs are closing in on the start of training camp, which is set to open on July 21. The Chiefs' offense decided to re-sign Marquise Brown to run it back with the trio of Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice.

The hype was there, but it may be put on hold with the latest update regarding Rice. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, a Dallas County judge sentenced Rice to five years of probation and 30 days of jail time that can be served anytime over these five years. These sentences come from a multi-car crash in Dallas last offseason that Rice played a part in.

Schefter added that since the judge ruled, the NFL can hurry up its process, and Rice is likely to receive a multi-game suspension opening the door for reps at the WR spot.

Given this, the Chiefs should look to add WR Keenan Allen before camp begins.

Chiefs Should Look to Add Keenan Allen After Rashee Rice News

Rice's role in the passing attack is to be an underneath weapon on a ton of drags, crossers, and slants. His ADOT (average depth of target) was 4.8 yards in 2023 and 5.2 last season before going down with a knee injury.

He thrives in getting open in a hurry and providing the offense with a secure pass catcher. Allen is the ideal playmaker who could fit perfectly in this role. Throughout his career, the 33-year-old has torched defenders in the slot.

Last season with the Bears, Allen had 70 receptions for 744 yards, seven touchdowns, and 10.6 yards per reception. His ADOT was also 9.0 in 2024, marking his fifth straight year below 10 in that category.

One of the biggest problems for Allen is his inability to stay healthy for an entire season, but that's not what the Chiefs would be looking for. Stepping in for a handful of games primarily seems like a great fit for both sides, and also offers insurance in case of any other WR absences in KC throughout 2025.

Allen would be able to compete for a Super Bowl, while Kansas City would add a veteran pass-catcher who could handle the responsibilities opened with Rice's expected absence. It's a pure win-win for a contender that needs to shore up any weaknesses to get back to the mountaintop.
