Chiefs Must Sign Just-Released Defender Before Playoffs
The Kansas City Chiefs are 15-1 on the season and have clinched the No. 1 seed in the AFC. Despite failing to score more than 30 points in any game this season, the Chiefs find a way to come out with wins.
They are chasing an unprecedented three-peat and have two weeks of rest before the Divisional Round starts. The Chiefs' roster got healthier as the season progressed and are ready for what lies ahead.
As the weather gets colder, having an effective pass rush becomes more important. On Tuesday, the Chiefs were gifted an opportunity to add another EDGE rusher to the team.
NFL News: Yannick Ngakoue Got Released on Tuesday
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Patriots waived pass rusher Yannick Ngakoue. He was a member of the Baltimore Ravens this season before getting released. The Patriots then claimed Ngakoue in November.
In 11 games this season, Ngakoue has nine total tackles, six QB hits, one TFL, and 1.5 sacks.
In his career, the 29-year-old has logged 238 total tackles, 72 TFLs, and 70.5 sacks. Although he's not the same player he once was, he could still be a valuable asset for the postseason.
Kansas City has notched 39 team sacks this season but not one player has secured double-digit sacks in 2024. Potentially adding a playmaker like Ngakoue could be a wise decision. Granted he's subject to waivers and since the Chiefs have the best record in the league, they'll have to hope no one puts in a claim to land the veteran.
The Chiefs traded for Josh Uche ahead of the trade deadline, but that move has aged badly over the second half of the season. That move showed they were looking more from the pass rush and Ngakoue's release now gives them the chance to add an effective player right before the postseason.
Chris Jones still leads the way up front but having different waves to throw at opposing teams can go a long way in the dance.
If the Chiefs get a chance to bring in Ngakoue, they should pounce on it. There aren't many opportunities to add a Pro Bowl defender at this point of the season.
