The Kansas City Chiefs are getting at least one more season of Travis Kelce after the tight end opted to return for his 14th season amid retirement rumors. While Kelce has an obvious argument as the greatest to ever play the position, there has to be a level of checked expectations as the pass catcher continues to age. Not since the 2022 season has Kelce surpassed 1,000 receiving yards, a number that the tight end used to reach with regularity, piling up great regular-season numbers before delivering in the playoffs as well.
Still, Kelce has been productive, offering over 800 receiving yards each of the past two seasons and finishing last year as the team's leading receiver. This isn't to argue that Kelce isn't going to be a productive option, but pointing out the reality that as the tight end continues to age, realistic expectations should be set.
A part of this is Kansas City needing Kelce's best moments saved for January and not risking putting too many miles on the 36-year-old in the regular season. With the Chiefs' running game led by Kenneth Walker and Emmett Johnson, expects to be an actual threat, a season of 600-700 receiving yards and six touchdowns should be considered the expected bar for the veteran tight end.
Chiefs fans should have fair expectations for Travis Kelce in the 2026 season
Lesser numbers should be due to the Chiefs protecting the tight end and not a loss of capability. While Kelce has undeniably slowed a step or two, he remains incredibly reliable for Mahomes and a weapon that it will be hard not to consistently lean on throughout the regular season.
The Chiefs are going to have to walk the tightrope of utilizing an elite weapon while understanding Kelce is aging and needs to save his best moments for when the season matters most. Having a reliable run game should help this cause and allow the Chiefs to have a level of balance the offense has lacked in recent years.
For Kelce, the goal is obviously to go out as a champion and continue to put his fingerprints on Kansas City's dynasty. As heartbreaking as it is to think about the tight end walking away, it would be a storybook ending to a career that is already in the books as a sure Hall of Fame case.
Greatness that has faded a bit and must be protected, the Chiefs must understand the value of Kelce at full strength when the playoffs roll around. This makes it clear that the pass catcher needs to be put in a lesser role as the Chiefs look ahead and attempt to hold off Father Time just a little while longer.
