Chiefs must lean on late-round receivers amid Rashee Rice uncertainty

Rashee Rice's off-the-field ineptitude has prompted the Kansas City Chiefs to turn up the pressure on two young receivers, Cyrus Allen and Jalen Royals.

The Kansas City Chiefs have continued to grow increasingly frustrated with Rashee Rice and have been left with no choice but to look to other pieces to step up in the receiver's place. It isn't that Rice doesn't offer immense talent, but rather that Kansas City has zero reason for confidence that the pass catcher isn't going to do something incredibly unwise that prevents him from taking the field. This turns up the pressure on a depth chart that lacks many proven answers.

Depth pieces that could take on more important roles are Jalen Royals and Cyrus Allen. Both are late-round selections from the past two seasons and have been overlooked as potential contributors. For Royals, it was an underwhelming rookie season, finishing with only a pair of catches. However, this doesn't take away the receiver's elite ability after the catch or the chance he can make an impact when given a bigger opportunity.

For Allen, the rookie is a great route runner and finds ways to create space that could make him a clear contributor in Andy Reid's offense. Both players are going to be given ample opportunity based on the inconsistency of Rice, and a KC depth chart that is wide open for competition.

Aside from the questions facing Rice, you have Xavier Worthy coming off an underwhelming 2025 season and Tyquan Thornton putting up a career year. This makes it clear that the receiver position remains an area of concern, opening the door for both Royals and Allen to take advantage of a chance despite their low draft stock.

This battle must start in OTAs and go throughout the summer, with hopes that the Chiefs don't need to add additional reinforcements. Royals and Allen, neither having incredible resumes or high draft stock, turn up the pressure for growth and potential impact to be consistently shown throughout the summer leading into camp and the preseason.

Rice continuing to make poor off-the-field decisions has opened the door for both players to become important pieces in the Kansas City offense. It makes sense for the Chiefs to look in a different direction if there are any viable contributors, and both Allen and Royals appear to be the team's best options for finding surprise production on the current roster.

With this in mind, fans should keep a close eye on the duo throughout OTAs and into the summer. There is a clear chance in front of both players to earn the trust of Reid and Patrick Mahomes, becoming more than just depth pieces but meaningful contributors within one of the league's most talented teams. This is all thanks to the unreliability of Rice and Kansas City's elite ability to find draft bargains, leaving expectations of both Allen and Royals heading closer to the 2026 season.
