Kansas City Chiefs fans still can only sit and wait for the league's decision when it comes to receiver Rashee Rice. A suspension is expected and understood, dampening excitement for the return of the franchise star. Rice has established that when he is healthy, the Chiefs are going to be incredibly difficult to beat. Something that gives Kansas City fans hope, understanding that even if a suspension does come down, the star's 2025 return is only a matter of time. With that said, the Chiefs should still consider adding to a crowded receiver room.
While a myriad of depth options remain, the team lacks a proven threat to step in while Rice is missing. Already, Xavier Worthy and Hollywood Brown have dealt with early camp injuries. Serving as a reminder of how little proven depth the franchise has to offer, and leaving one obvious move as a potential fix. With the Los Angeles Chargers signing Keenan Allen earlier in the week, the last viable option in free agency is Amari Cooper. After ending last season with the Bills, it would be the perfect cap to camp to bring in the veteran.
The Chiefs Should Consider Signing Aging Receiver Amari Cooper
While it is clear Cooper cannot be relied on as a star player for long stretches, the veteran would be able to help cover the absence of Rice. It was only a season ago that the veteran was putting up elite numbers with Joe Flacco and the struggling Cleveland Browns. With a full offseason to get healthy, it is easy to imagine a rebound scenario with the league's best quarterback. If Cooper has anything left in the tank, it is Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes who can unlock it.
At worst, the Chiefs bring Cooper into camp and find out there isn't anything left in the tank. Having a number of depth and veteran options already, it wouldn't be difficult to move on. With this in mind, signing Cooper is a no-lose situation for a team that could use one final piece as the franchise prepares to attempt to win a fourth straight AFC title. While Super Bowls remain the goal, this is a great example of dynastic dominance.
Cooper may not be Rice, but the veteran puts up numbers when healthy and can become a key contributor in an exciting Kansas City offense. No question, it is at least worth a look as the Chiefs continue to await a decision on their star receiver.
