The Kansas City Chiefs are fresh off their biggest win of the season. Now, they will look to make it two in a row by taking down the undermanned Washington Commanders at home for Monday Night Football.
Of course, injuries are never a positive thing. But this time, Andy Reid's team might catch another lucky break. According to a report by Charles Goldman of A to Z Sports, the visitors might not have their starting kicker on the field.
Matt Gay is Questionable For The Commanders
"Commanders K Matt Gay added to the injury report on Saturday with a back issue. Something to watch," Goldman wrote on X.
Gay hasn't been the most accurate kicker in the league this season, as he's missed four of his 14field goal attempts. Then again, he's a perfect 18 for 18 in extra point attempts, and he could've had a huge role in this game.
The Commanders won't have starting quarterback Jayden Daniels, as the young star is dealing with a low-grade hamstring strain. Veteran Marcus Mariota will take the reins of the offense, and as much as he's an experienced and proven players, Dan Quinn's team might struggle to execute against Steve Spagnuolo's stellar defense.
Gay is dealing with a back injury, and while he hasn't been ruled out of this high-flying contest, knowing that he's not going to be at full strength could also force the Commanders to be more aggressive on fourth down.
The Chiefs are dealing with some issues of their own at the position. Veteran Harrison Butker has been a talking point for all the wrong reasons this season, and while special teams coach Dave Toubs continues to have his back, he has been a liability waiting to seriously burn KC in a close game.
The Chiefs clearly have plenty of love and respect for him, which is understandable, given how much he's done for the organization during the dynasty years. Then again, they can't afford to have a weak link on their roster if they want to get back to Super Bowl contention.
The benefit of the doubt can only take you so far in this league, and if Butker has another dismal outing on national television, it will be hard to make a case for him to stay on the team for the remainder of the season.
As for the Commanders, this was already an uphill battle for them, and it just got much tougher.
