The Kansas City Chiefs have yet to make a big addition to their pass catcher corps, and Patrick Mahomes needs more help. They brought Travis Kelce back and re-signed Tyquan Thornton, but haven't done anything to make up for the loss of Marquise "Hollywood" Brown.
Of course, with two first-round picks and nine selections overall, they should have plenty of bandwidth to add someone else to the mix. However, a recent turn of events may give them another opportunity in the undrafted free agent market.
According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, TCU's Eric McAlister, an intriguing Day 3 prospect, suffered a foot injury that might make him slip in most big boards. That's a big window of opportunity for Andy Reid's team.
"TCU WR Eric McAlister, slated to be a Day 3 selection, suffered a broken foot while doing position drills at his Pro Day, sources say. The Jones fracture may cause him to slip a bit, though he should be ready with plenty of time for the season," Rapoport shared on X.
The Chiefs Should Consider Eric McAlister After the NFL Draft
McAlister is listed as No. 262 on NFL Mock Draft Database's consensus board. He was a borderline selection, so this injury, minor as it is, will probably make most teams pivot to other options. Still, if he's going to be healthy, there's no reason not to consider him.
The Chiefs need as much help as they can get in the wide receiver corps right now. Rashee Rice reportedly won't be suspended for allegations of domestic violence that surfaced earlier this year, but with so many stories around him and only so much production, they might not feel comfortable giving him a long-term, big-money extension, knowing all the risks associated with that move.
As for Xavier Worthy, he's left plenty to be desired in his first two years in the league. He's fast and all, but they haven't used him to the best of his skills, and he hasn't done much to earn more targets, either.
Eric McAlister may not be the most polished prospect out there, but at 6-foot-4 and boasting impressive speed, he's a perennial mismatch in the open field and a true big-play specialist for his ability to pile up yards after the catch. The Chiefs don't have a seventh-round pick, so he was probably off their radar, but getting him as a risk-free undrafted free agent makes perfect sense for this team if his news causes his draft day outlook to go sideways.
