Chiefs may have to outbid division rival to land Kayshon Boutte in potential trade

The Kansas City Chiefs' wide receiver room left plenty to be desired last season. Instead of addressing that need, the front office let most of the veterans walk away and drafted a rookie on day three of the 2026 NFL Draft.

That's not a good omen for a team that has struggled to put up big numbers on offense since Eric Bieniemy left. And as much as his return will help the offense, Patrick Mahomes still needs someone to throw the ball to.

Considering that, Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report listed the Chiefs as a logical landing spot for New England Patriots WR Kayshon Boutte. However, they may not be alone in that pursuit, as he also named the Las Vegas Raiders as a potential destination.

"The New England Patriots added their new No. 1 receiver when they acquired A.J. Brown from the Eagles. They also added Romeo Doubs in free agency, which leaves plenty of uncertainty around the future of Kayshon Boutte," wrote Knox. "Boutte is entering the final year of his rookie deal, and it feels increasingly unlikely that his future will be in New England."

While not a big-name wideout, Boutte has proven to be a reliable big-play specialist. He's developed strong chemistry with Drake Maye, and he's coming off a career-best year of six touchdowns and nearly 17 yards per catch. He may only need a change of scenery and a bigger role to break out.

Knox cites the Patriots would probably give him up for a 2027 fifth-round pick, given that he's on an expiring deal and has seemingly expressed a desire to be traded. Boutte is the odd man out in New England's renewed and crowded wide receiver room, so the writing is on the wall.

The Raiders could also use a helping hand in the passing game. Whether it's veteran Kirk Cousins or No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza leading this offense, they don't have many weapons to work with. Even if Ashton Jeanty will be the focal point of their offense, they need to give the quarterbacks another reliable pass-catcher next to tight end Brock Bowers.

The Chiefs should be willing to go as high as a fourth-round selection to outbid the Raiders and get their hands on the LSU product. While not a superstar by any means, Boutte's arrow has trended up in the past couple of seasons.

More than that, the Chiefs don't have many proven outside weapons right now. Beggars can't be choosers, and the Chiefs' wide receiver room might be one of the biggest question marks in the league entering this season.

They seem to overvalue the unreliable Rashee Rice way too much, and Xavier Worthy has bought more chains than he has scored touchdowns since entering the league as a first-round pick. The Chiefs need to make a move, and preventing Kayshon Boutte from joining a division rival would only make this deal even sweeter.
