Quietly, one of the biggest wins of the Kansas City Chiefs' 2026 offseason was bringing in Justin Fields. The backup quarterback offers a level of starting experience and stability that offers the Chiefs a chance to win if the signal caller is forced into the lineup. For Fields, the quarterback has a chance to join a winning organization and attempt to reset his value after failing as a starter with three different teams.

Fields noted his excitement via ESPN's Nate Taylor, making it clear that he views this fit as a chance to learn and reset his career. This is a telling outlook, both of the respect that Kansas City garners throughout the league and why Fields appears so excited for the fit. Offering the following on joining the Chiefs and what it means to his career:

""I wanted to come here because of the (Chiefs') culture, because of Pat, and to learn from him and Coach Reid, just the winning, to be honest. We of course knew of each other, but we really didn't communicate before coming here. I'm excited to learn from (Mahomes). I'm already kind of picking his brain a little bit and just observing how he goes about things in the meeting rooms, field, and stuff like that. I'm excited, of course, to work with Coach Reid and (offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy) and all the guys on offense.""

Fields is completely honest here, putting out that he wants to learn from the league's most accomplished offense and utilize it to breathe life into his own career. The quarterback has had very limited passing success, with his best season coming in 2023 when he finished with 17 passing touchdowns and 2,562 passing yards.

Justin Fields gives hope that Chiefs can breathe life back into his career

While these numbers are far from impressive, this does serve as a chance for Fields to put his career back on track. Learning under the trio of Bieniemy, Mahomes, and Reid is as good a chance at a reset as the talented quarterback is going to get. If there is any team in the league capable of getting Fields a fourth chance at starting in this league, it is KC.

There is also the clear angle that this gives Fields a chance to compete for a Super Bowl in a reserve role. Even if the Chiefs opt not to utilize the quarterback's legs, he will have a chance to be in a backup role and watch how Kansas City attacks the postseason and gets ready each and every week.

No question, this was a great fit for both sides and gives the Chiefs a chance to revitalize the career of an incredibly talented player. Fields has all of the tools, but has been held back by poor decision-making and tough situations playing with the Bears, Steelers, and Jets, with all three of these teams providing incredibly limited offensive talent. Fields has joined the most talented offense he has been a part of and simply needs to sit back and embrace the chance to learn, clearly understanding the chance that has been given to breathe life back into his career.
