One of the more surprising stories of the Kansas City Chiefs' 2025 season is the news that offensive coordinator Matt Nagy could be viewed as a top option for the Tennessee Titans' head coaching job. Why any franchise would want to take on Nagy, whose arrival has aligned with Kansas City's offensive regression and has a 34-33 record as a head coach, is truly a mystery. One that just grew far less likely to need solving, with Nagy having a chance to impress his prospective employer on Sunday and managing to put up only nine points in a frustrating loss.

The K.C. offense was bland and lacked energy despite having every reason to end the underwhelming season on a high note. This appears to be the final ride for Travis Kelce, and the Chiefs' roster has no shortage of young pieces that should be fighting for future contributing roles. Instead, the offense was underwhelming against one of the NFL's worst defenses, as the Chiefs only tallied three field goals and 133 total yards.

With this in mind, it's hard to imagine the Titans walking out of that game, thinking that Nagy could be 'their guy.' Unfortunately, what's bad news for the 47-year-old's chances of moving to Tennessee is also a terrible development for the Chiefs' offensive future.

Chiefs Might Be Stuck with Matt Nagy After Dud vs. Titans

If the Titans aren't generous enough to take Nagy off the Chiefs' hands, fans might be stuck with the status quo. Head coach Andy Reid is expected to return to his role next season, per NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, meaning he'll likely want to retain his coaching staff if that's the case.

The Chiefs had one of the greatest quarterbacks to step foot on a football field in Patrick Mahomes for much of the season, and struggled to score 20 even when healthy. Since Nagy has joined the staff, the offense has had to piece things together with Mahomes spending the 2024 season dinking and dunking his way down the field, finding late-game miracles. This was reflected by a 12-0 record in one-score games a season ago.

However, at some point, the Chiefs started asking too much of their franchise QB and a limited group of playmakers who simply need to be set up better for success. This is why fans were so hopeful and excited by the news of Nagy's potential exit. Beating the Titans would've improved the chances of that happening. Instead, there's a real chance that Kansas City's offensive struggles will bleed into the 2026 campaign.

The Chiefs' dynasty has been great, but it's never been clearer that retooling is needed. There's a perfect chance to get the opportunity back on track and in a great spot for Mahomes to return to by moving on from Nagy. Yes, he likely failed to impress the Titans, but that doesn't mean Kansas City shouldn't consider moving on from him anyway.

Mahomes and his weapons are too talented to be as ineffective as they were this season. For that to change, Nagy must go.
