The Kansas City Chiefs wanted to add more firepower to their decimated defensive line as the midway point in the season approaches. Fortunately for them, a familiar face just happened to be available. Mike Pennel requested to be released by the Cincinnati Bengals, and it didn't take long before he made his way back to Missouri.

The Chiefs' decision to part ways with their veteran defensive tackle was surprising at the moment. He was expected to make the 53-man roster, and they clearly regretted letting him go. Now, everybody's glad to have him back.

Chiefs Are Happy to Bring Mike Pennel Back

Fellow defensive tackle Chris Jones advocated for Pennel's return a couple of weeks ago. That's why it wasn't much of a surprise to hear him being so vocal about the lineman's comeback and what he can bring to the locker room.

"I'm super excited," Jones said, per A to Z Sports' Charles Goldman. "That's how the universe works, you've got to put the energy out there. (He's) A veteran presence. Good for the locker room, great guy... just brings positive energy. A good high-energy guy."

Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo also addressed Pennel's return. Not only did he discuss how glad he was to have the defender back in the building, but Spagnuolo also pointed out that Pennel's going to be a seamless fit for what they want to do on defense.

"It's probably an easier transition for him," Spagnuolo said, per Goldman. "We're glad we got him. He's fun to have around and a good football player."

Pennel played an instrumental role in the Chiefs' last three trips to the Super Bowl. While he doesn't get as much recognition as a legitimate superstar and Defensive Player of the Year candidate like Jones, he's an excellent run-stopper. The Chiefs are already stout against the run, but even the best things can be better.

Losing rookie DT Omarr Norman-Lott may have changed the team's plans. And while Derrick Nnadi has played well enough to still get plenty of snaps down the stretch, Pennel is just too good and too familiar with the defensive scheme not to make the most of this opportunity.

The Chiefs will be in for a tough challenge when they hit the road to face the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, and with star RB James Cook looking to wreak havoc, having another proven veteran in the defensive line can be crucial to contain their high-flying offense.
