Since the start of the offseason, I have been doing mock drafts where the Chiefs land an offensive tackle within the first 100 picks. With the Chiefs signing a left tackle that they hope can stick on Mahomes' blind side over the next few seasons, let's take a look at how this move impacts their plan for the upcoming NFL draft.

Who Are the Most Likely Options for the Chiefs in Round 1?

Coming into the offseason, addressing the offensive line was the biggest need for the Chiefs. Now they have tagged Trey Smith and signed Jaylon Moore, it seems they have their starters along the line figured out for next season. These additions give the team a clearer picture of their needs and provide them with options for the draft as we get closer to April.

One of the best options for the Chiefs at the top of the draft has become defensive tackle, which is one of the strongest positions in this year's draft. The Chiefs have a clear need at DT next to Chris Jones, with several players from their 2024 roster hitting free agency. This year, I have five defensive tackles with first-round grades, and it is all but guaranteed that one will make it to the Chiefs at 31.

If the Chiefs can add someone like Kenneth Grant or Derrick Harmon at the end of the first round, they will have one of the best defensive lines in the NFL immediately in 2025.

Another option for the Chiefs would be wide receiver, with several options who could be available at the end of the first round. The Chiefs have added WR early in each of the last two drafts, with Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice, and just signed Hollywood Brown to a one-year deal. But with all three facing injuries or legal troubles, there is no guarantee of their play time. Adding someone like Luther Burden, Emeka Egbuka, or Matthew Golden could make an impact on the offensive side of the ball.

Finally, the Chiefs could continue to attack the offensive line. With Joe Thuney departing, there is still a potential need at guard. Jawaan Taylor has had some struggles on the right side, and Jaylon Moore has limited experience in the NFL. Injuries happen, and with several players potentially leaving next season, the team could still look to add to the offensive line.

Summary

The reality is that these additions should not change the draft plan much. The Chiefs will still need help in the trenches on both the offensive and defensive lines in the draft this year and should make that their top priority.

As we have seen over the years, it is hard to find high-end linemen on either side of the ball, and it is smart to invest in the line early in the draft. Hopefully, the Chiefs will continue to add, and we will get a better picture of what their board looks like as we get closer to draft day.
