The Kansas City Chiefs had a clear question mark heading into OTAs when it came to who defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo would utilize at nickel corner. It appears that this is a question for Spagnuolo himself, with OTAs revealing a heated competition for the starting role with the trio of Jadon Canady, Kader Kohou, and Chris Roland-Wallace all in the running. Notably, there is one name absent here, with Chamarri Connor expected to be back at safety.

Connor is far better suited for this role and struggled in the nickel position, leaving fans hopeful this wouldn't be viewed as a viable option. That has proven to be the case with an interesting group now fighting for a role in Spagnuolo's defense. Kohou has offered clear upside throughout his career, but isn't the unknown that Canady is, with the rookie having the advantage of youth and being a wildcard at the position.

Roland-Wallace would be the most surprising to take the starting role, with nothing on the defender's resume offering a clear advantage over his competition. No matter how it might play out, this is a great development for the Chiefs and speaks to a culture that was given a needed adjustment after a failure of the 2025 season.

Chiefs have exciting defensive battle brewing as fight for starting role begins

There was a predictability to last season's roster and a sense of complacency that had previously never defined the dynastic Chiefs. Having this level of competition so early in the summer is a great sign and gives life to a roster that appears far better equipped to handle increasingly high expectations.

Competition encourages growth, and that is exactly what this young Kansas City defense needs heading into the 2026 season. There must be a level of improvement when you consider the number of young pieces that the Chiefs are banking on stepping into new roles. The best way to encourage this is with true competitions, and starting this so early in the year is a great move from Kansas City's coaching staff.

It will be interesting to watch how the battle plays out and what other surprise fights open up as the Chiefs clearly are making aggressive coaching adjustments. Changes that allow Roland-Wallace a surprise chance at a starting role or the rookie Canady a chance to become Spagnuolo's next success story at the position. No matter how things play out, it is a great story for fans and demands the best of a roster once again facing Super Bowl expectations.
