The Kansas City Chiefs began their 2025 offseason by franchise-tagging right guard Trey Smith, a move that shocked many (even though it shouldn't have). The reason it was so shocking is that they had to pay a premium on Smith for just one season. Kansas City choosing to exercise the tag also meant they would continue to have contract extension conversations.

Currently, the two sides have yet to come to terms on a new deal, but that doesn't mean fans should lose hope that a deal will get done. On Thursday, general manager Brett Veach provided an update on Smith's contract negotiations during his media availability, stating, "Hopefully, we get that done. There is no lack of interest, will, or desire on our end." He added that once the draft is over, they'll reconnect with his agency, CAA (h/t Charles Goldman).

Brett Veach Stills Determined to Finalize a Deal with Trey Smith

Veach's comments on the situation are not a new revelation. Since the beginning of these negotiations, Veach has preached the Chiefs' desire to keep Smith. The same can be said on Smith's side, as he continuously praises Kansas City and says it's the place where he wants to stay.

That said, it makes sense that the 25-year-old is taking his time finalizing the deal. Smith wants to ensure he makes the most money he possibly can with the Chiefs, since if he hit free agency, he would have received a lucrative contract.

Nonetheless, there is no need to worry if a contract isn't finalized before the season begins. The two sides could always come to terms during the 2025 season.

Fans should only start to panic if it's reported that contract talks have stalled between the two parties. Though that doesn't sound likely, given how much it seems both sides want to continue working with each other.
