During their playoff run this year, the Kansas City Chiefs lost one of their key front office members. Assistant general manager Mike Borgonzi was named the new general manager of the Tennessee Titans in January, poaching a staffer with a ton of experience.
It was only a matter of time before Borgonzi got his chance to be a GM, as he wore various hats during his 16 years with the Chiefs. At the same time, it was a huge loss for the Chiefs, who did not immediately hire Borgonzi’s replacement.
However, the Chiefs have found the perfect solution to their assistant GM vacancy. Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reported Saturday that Kansas City is promoting Mike Bradway and Chris Shea to assistant GM roles.
Chiefs fans seemed pleased with Brett Veach’s decision to promote within the organization for Borgonzi’s vacancy. Before being promoted to assistant GM roles, Shea most recently served as the Senior Vice President of Football Operations and Strategy. Meanwhile, Bradway served as the Senior Director of Player Personnel.
Shea has been with the Chiefs for eight years and 26 overall in the NFL. He joined Kansas City in 2017 as a Salary Cap and Legal Executive. After one year in that role, Shea was promoted to Football Operations Counsel and Personnel Executive, where he served from 2018 to 2020.
From there, Shea got an upgrade in title and role to Vice President of Football Operations/Team Counsel, which he held from 2021 to 2023. According to his bio on the Chiefs website, Shea has been involved in all roster decisions, including contract negotiations for Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Chris Jones.
Meanwhile, Bradway recently joined the Chiefs in 2018 after spending the previous nine years (2008-17) with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he had a chance to work with Andy Reid and Veach.
Bradway spent the first three years in Kansas City (2018-20) as the Chiefs’ Assistant Director of Player Personnel. After holding that position for some time, Bradway was promoted in 2021 to Senior Director of Player Personnel.
Given Kansas City’s success over the years, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Shea or Bradway get GM interviews in the next few years. Veach is putting both in a position to take that next step and hopefully follow in Borgonzi’s footsteps.
