Chiefs Finally Replace Jaylen Watson in Latest Projected Trade
By Cem Yolbulan
Despite the 7-0 start to the season, the Kansas City Chiefs have been very active on the trade market in the past couple of weeks, acquiring DeAndre Hopkins and Joshua Uche to address their big needs. With the November 5th trade deadline right around the corner, they have one more weakness they have to address and that is their cornerback rotation.
Emerging talent Jaylen Watson was placed on the injured reserve list recently and will likely miss the rest of the season. Nazeeh Johnson has been performing admirably in his place, but he doesn't have the upside or the experience. For Chiefs fans to feel good about the quality of their secondary, they need another high-level backfield defender.
Fortunately for them, there may be a four-time Pro Bowler available on the trade market. Now that the New Orleans Saints lost six straight to fall behind in the NFC standings, they will presumably be open to moving their talented veterans with trade value. That includes 28-year-old Marshon Lattimore.
The Chiefs could potentially acquire the star cornerback with a mid-round pick. They could also send out a third-round pick and get a late-round selection in addition to Lattimore. A potential construction could look like this:
For this deal to happen, the Saints have to accept reality and enter a rebuild. Trading Lattimore would save them over $10 million in 2025 cap space. That could prove very valuable for an expensive, aging team.
Lattimore isn't the same force he was earlier in his career, but he is still an impactful defender. In seven games this season, he allowed a 54.5% completion rate and a 69.1 pass rating when targeted. On PFF, he still ranks as a quality cornerback with a 69.5 grade for the season. He would be an immediate upgrade for the Chiefs opposite Trent McDuffie.
