The Kansas City Chiefs only needed one ugly season for the disrespect to return for Patrick Mahomes. Prior to last season, the quarterback's season had never ended short of the AFC Championship, and only Tom Brady has more career playoff wins. Still, this hasn't stopped pundits from doubting the greatness of Mahomes, and this was the case for FS1's Colin Cowherd, who ranked Mahomes second behind Josh Allen.
Cowherd's criteria were listed as needing to have momentum, and this was the reason for knocking Mahomes a spot behind Allen. While it is undeniable that the quarterback is coming off the worst season of his career, this is incredibly disrespectful and ignores the context of the two players. Four times Allen and Mahomes have faced off in the playoffs, and each time it was the KC quarterback who got the better of the supposedly more impressive Allen.
In a league where championships define legacies, Allen should at least win an AFC title before being ranked ahead of the league's most accomplished quarterback. This simply serves as a reminder of how numb the greatness of Mahomes has become, with pundits consistently searching for a reason to knock the signal caller off his pedestal and make the case for anyone else.
Disrespectful Mahomes ranking proves Chiefs still remain villains
Mahomes has nine more playoff wins than Allen (17:8) and is 33rd in all-time regular-season passing yards (35,939), while Allen is 56th (30,102). Looking at meaningful stats, there really isn't a viable case to be made that Allen deserves to sit ahead of Mahomes until the quarterback beats the champion. This is the missing piece of Cowherd's logic, with it being incredibly important in today's league to prove yourself capable of being at your best when the lights are brightest.
This has always been the case for Mahomes, who stepped into a starring role and became an MVP and Super Bowl champion at the start of his career. This should demand a higher level of respect and be given the attention it deserves, rather than consistently attempting to argue that Allen or whoever the hottest current quarterback might be has surpassed the Chiefs starter.
Furthering this is the fact that Mahomes already ranks 22nd in all-time regular-season passing touchdowns (267), with Allen coming in 20 spots behind the KC quarterback at 220 scores. Whether you want to look at wins, stats, playoff moments, Super Bowls, or playoff record, any avenue you choose is going to come up with Mahomes as the obvious answer.
The quarterback's greatness and consistency have simply bored pundits and left them searching blindly for a new answer. An answer that is undeniably disrespectful to the league's most accomplished starter, who should continue to be considered the league's standard until someone proves they can beat Mahomes when it matters most.
