The Kansas City Chiefs shook up the receiver depth chart in the 2026 offseason, parting ways with Hollywood Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster in free agency. The one piece the franchise did opt to re-sign at the position was Tyquan Thornton, handing the pass catcher a two-year deal worth $11 million. Barring any notable additions in the upcoming draft class, Thornton is poised to step into the starting lineup. It is fair to wonder if this is a reasonable expectation for a player who appeared to be a bust until the 2025 season.

Thornton finished his first season with the Chiefs, putting up 438 receiving yards and a trio of touchdowns. This is more production than Thornton offered in his first three seasons in the league combined. The first years of Thornton's career were spent with the New England Patriots, where the pass catcher would offer 385 receiving yards and two touchdowns in his three seasons with the Patriots.

With this in mind, there is reason to wonder if KC is making a mistake putting so much faith in the veteran. While both Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy sit in front of Thornton on the depth chart, there is still a high level of responsibility that has been placed on the receiver heading into the 2026 season. Responsibility that it wouldn't be shocking to see misplaced for a player who has offered one lone productive season in four years.

Chiefs Taking Clear Risk Placing Trust in Veteran Receiver Tyquan Thornton

It should be noted here that the Chiefs have future concerns with Rice as well, making it clear that the team could still add to the position. Kansas City holds two first-round picks thanks to the trade of Trent McDuffie, leaving room to add a starting receiver to the position and wipe away any concerns about Thornton in the starting lineup.

For now, however, Thornton projects as an incredibly important piece in the KC offense, and this leaves every reason for a healthy level of concern. Even in Thornton's breakout season with the Chiefs, there were long periods where he would fade away in the offense. From Week 8 until Week 12 in the 2025 season, Thornton would register all of one reception on four targets.

This headlines why fans should be concerned about promoting the pass catcher. It is very plausible that last season's production was an outlier, and due to the greatness of Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs are setting themselves up for failure at the position.

It is a clear concern and one of the last remaining question marks for an offense that otherwise appears to be moving in the right direction. No question, Thornton remains an uncertainty that the Chiefs should consider addressing in the next weeks of the offseason.
