Chiefs Defender Makes Shocking Reveal About Blocked FG to Beat Broncos
Leo Chenal became an instant hero in Kansas City after his game-winning field goal block against the Denver Broncos on Sunday. The Broncos were devastated and the Chiefs remained undefeated even though the game was much closer than it should have been.
Chenal's heroics made the single-handed difference between this being a celebratory Monday or a gloomy "can the Chiefs bounce back from a disastrous loss in a tough matchup in Week 11?" kind of Monday.
But it turns out that Chenal's incredible play was even more amazing than it seemed on the surface. Not only was he the hero of the game, but defender Mike Pennel revealed in a postgame interview that Chenal had called his shot too.
How's that for impressive? The 24-year-old linebacker is certainly well known as a special teams ace, but to call your shot on a blocked field goal? A play that some teams don't even record one of in an entire season? And with the game on the line?
I'm not saying Leo Chenal is a bigger legend than Babe Ruth. But how many field goals did the Babe ever block? Makes you think.
In all seriousness though, it's great for Chenal to have such a massive moment like this to start getting him the recognition he deserves. He's been absolutely incredible in 2024, and PFF has him graded out at no. 11 among 157 qualifying linebackers, including ranking no. 4 in coverage among that same group.
The 2023 third-round pick is quietly one of the best players on the Chiefs' defense, and the fact that he's not only willing to contribute on special teams but actually seems excited to do it? That kind of team-first attitude will only go further to solidify him in the team's long-term plans.
The 2025 season will be the final one on Chenal's rookie contract, carrying just a $1.6 million cap hit, and the Chiefs would be wise to get a new contract done this offseason to keep him in Kansas City for a few more years.
