The Kansas City Chiefs are finally getting closer to healthy on the offensive side of the ball with the return of Hollywood Brown. Yet, some fans aren't entirely convinced about the viability of the WR corps heading into the postseason.

A recent surprise transaction opens the door for the Chiefs to make an upgrade right before the playoffs. The Baltimore Ravens waived WR Diontae Johnson on Friday. The former Steelers and Panthers playmaker will now be able to join a team to provide veteran competence down the stretch. The Chiefs could be that team.

Chiefs Could Take a Gamble on WR Diontae Johnson

At the trade deadline, Johnson was many Chiefs fans' favorite rumored target. The Panthers ended up trading him to the Ravens for a fifth-round pick and the Chiefs opted to bring DeAndre Hopkins in instead.

Johnson's tenure in Baltimore didn't go according to the plan. He never established a role in the passing game and his snap count fell as weeks went on. In Week 13 against the Eagles, Johnson refused to enter the game and was subsequently suspended for the next game. He hasn't played in a game since and was just waived.

Before his trade to the Ravens, however, Johnson was having a solid season with the Panthers. In seven games, he had 30 catches for 357 yards and three touchdowns. In a dysfunctional Panthers offense, he was one of the lone bright spots.

Johnson is not the 1,000+ yard receiver he was when he was in Pittsburgh. But he is still a talented pass-catcher who can certainly have a role in Kansas City.

The 28-year-old receiver is in a contract year and will have extra motivation down the season's final stretch to prove his worth. Johnson can now be claimed until Monday afternoon. Whether the Chiefs will be interested in doing so remains to be seen.
