Chiefs safety Justin Reid is one of the team's marquee pending free agents this offseason. He's been superb in his three years with the team, and special teams coordinator Dave Toub sounds like he wants Brett Veach to break his one big free agency rule.

Veach has famously never re-signed a member of the secondary, preferring to turn to cheap, young talent instead. Reid is an invaluable leader and beloved member of the community. If there was anyone to re-sign, he's a logical choice.

That said, Kansas City has already been preparing for his departure with the selections of Bryan Cook and Jaden Hicks. Reid may be playing his last season with the team, though he's doing his best to ensure he'll stick around.

Reid's ability to rush the edge is an underrated part of his game. He's extremely quick off the jump, helping propel Leo Chenal to his Week 10 heroics.

"He's really the engine of the whole thing," Toub said. "If you don't have the fast edge guy, they don't overplay him."

Chenal wasn't double-teamed inside, largely because of the pressure Reid put on the offensive line. Things obviously worked out for Kansas City, and Reid's unique versatility makes him the unsung hero of the victory.

In all likelihood, Veach won't re-sign Reid. The Chiefs have prepared for this moment, yet it'll be sad for the Kingdom regardless. During Reid's time with the organization, he's compiled 228 tackles, 17 deflected passes, four sacks and two interceptions, helping cement the defense's identity as one of the best in the league.

We'll see what happens this offseason, but at least one Chiefs coach seemingly wants the star safety back.
