Chiefs Coach is Huge Fan of QB on Team Trying to Steal Him From KC
The Kansas City Chiefs have remained one of the top teams in the AFC over the past eight seasons for many reasons. One of these is that they have minimal turnover among their coaching staff from season to season. Nonetheless, this year, a few Chiefs coaches are drawing interest from teams with head coaching vacancies.
Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is one Chiefs coach on teams' radars. Based on recent comments, he sounds interested in coaching at least one opposing signal caller.
Both the New York Jets and the Las Vegas Raiders have already requested an interview with Spagnuolo, and a third team has now thrown their name into the mix. On Thursday, the Jacksonville Jaguars requested an interview with Spagnuolo, according to Pete Sweeney of Arrowhead Pride.
The Jaguars' interest in Spagnuolo is a big deal, given how he views quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Back in 2023, before the Chiefs played the Jaguars, Spagnuolo had this to say about Lawrence.
"“The thing that always stands out, and this stood out when we played — he’s huge. He’s big, he’s a big strong quarterback that can run. I showed a clip this morning (where) he runs, he didn’t slide, he’s running over people. He’s in the pocket, people get around him, and he’s getting out. He’s just a big, strong guy that can throw the football.”"

Amid Jaguars Rumors, Steve Spagnuolo Once Sang Trevor Lawrence's Praises
Reading too much into comments a coordinator makes about an opposing quarterback before a game is a dangerous thing to do since, most of the time, there is an unspoken respect for a competitor. However, Spagnuolo would likely not provide so much praise of Lawrence if he didn't fully believe it.
As a result, Chiefs fans should be a bit worried about Spagnuolo potentially leaving for Jacksonville. That said, if Spagnuolo did go to Jacksonville, he would have to completely rebuild their defense. While he is totally capable of doing so, it will take at least a few seasons to get it to where Kansas City's defense is right now.
The question is, at 65 years old, is Spagnuolo willing to undertake that task? No matter how much he likes Lawrence, it may not be worth it, given his age and the success he is having with the Chiefs.
No matter what Spagnuolo decides, Chiefs fans will forever be grateful for his contributions to the defense. Yet, they would much prefer if he stays in Kansas City instead of going to a potential AFC rival.
