Chiefs Have Clear WR Trade Opportunity After Shocking GM Firing
By Jovan Alford
The Kansas City Chiefs and Tennessee Titans made two of the bigger trades in the past several months, which helped out Kansas City. The Chiefs shockingly sent L’Jarius Sneed to the Titans this past offseason and received a high third-round pick in the 2025 draft.
Then in October, Kansas City acquired star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins ahead of the NFL trade deadline, who has asserted himself as one of Patrick Mahomes’ top options. While these moves have helped out the Chiefs, it did the opposite for the Titans, who shockingly fired GM Ron Carthon.
Carthon was the general manager in Nashville for two years and recently signed an extension this past offseason. With Carthon out the door, the Titans will be looking for a new GM, which means there could be some roster shakeup on the horizon.
If the Titans are looking to shake up their roster this offseason, the Chiefs should inquire about former first-round pick Treylon Burks. The former Arkansas wide receiver has struggled to live up to his first-round billing and be the replacement for A.J. Brown.
In his three seasons with the Titans, Burks only has 53 receptions (92 targets) for 699 yards and a touchdown. There was a thought that the 24-year-old receiver could carve out a role in the passing game this season, with Tennessee having Calvin Ridley and DeAndre Hopkins.
However, that never came to fruition, even with Hopkins going to Kansas City in October. Burks only appeared in five games as he was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury. He reportedly suffered a non-contact injury during practice.
Even if Burks was healthy, Nick Westbrook-Ikhine likely would’ve surpassed him on the depth chart, who developed into a touchdown machine. The former first-round pick has a $4.5 million cap hit in 2025 and a club option for 2026.
At this rate with how things are going, Burks might not get his option picked up. If the Chiefs are looking for a reclamation project at wide receiver, Burks might be worth a late Day 3 pick, if the Titans are open to it.
If things don’t work out with Burks, the Chiefs could release him or try to trade him again. Burks would provide more depth at wide receiver and force a position battle with Skyy Moore, who has been equally disappointing. The Chiefs showed us that they weren’t afraid to take a chance on Kadarius Toney.
Therefore, there’s no harm in taking a flier on Burks, who had some talent at Arkansas but hasn’t put it together yet in the pros.
