The Kansas City Chiefs have made an addition to the quarterback room with a surprising trade. The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt reported that the New York Jets are getting a 2027 sixth-round pick from the Chiefs in exchange for quarterback Justin Fields. He added that the Jets are taking most of Fields' remaining salary to get the deal done.

The Chiefs will now have a new QB2 in the building, and that could spell the end of Chris Oladokun's time in Kansas City.

Chris Oladokun’s Time in KC May Be Coming to an End After Justin Fields' Addition

Oladokun has been in Kansas City for the last two seasons, but the results have been underwhelming. Last season, he started two games for the Chiefs towards the tail end of the season. In those outings, he went 35-of-55 (63.6 percent) for 235 passing yards and one passing touchdown. He also added 18 rushing yards on the ground.

And while Oladokun had 235 passing yards, he posted 66 or fewer passing yards in his last two outings. The offense didn't finish with more than 168 total yards in either contest against the Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders, and couldn't score more than 13 points.

He was given the chance to showcase what he could do when he was thrown into the starter role, but he didn't do enough to lock down a roster spot. While Justin Fields didn't have a good season with the Jets in 2025, he still has a higher ceiling than other quarterbacks on the team who aren't named Patrick Mahomes.

Between stops with the Jets, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Chicago Bears, Fields has completed 61.3 percent of his throws for 9,039 passing yards, 52 passing touchdowns, and 32 interceptions. He can also provide some juice as a ball carrier, logging 2,892 rushing yards and 23 rushing scores.

There's no denying that Fields isn't the best thrower of the football, but he clearly has traits Andy Reid and Eric Bieniemy believe could work.

ESPN's Adam Schefter then stated that "adding Justin Fields allows him to take the bulk of the reps during offseason workouts and potentially into training camp as Mahomes continues to recover in hopes of being ready for the regular season."

Fields is expected to be QB2 when Mahomes is out, but until then, he'll likely get the starter reps. That means that Oladokun is pushed down the depth chart, and the odds that he'll be gone ahead of the 2026 season increased.

Jake Haener is the other quarterback on this roster, but he likely gets the edge over Oladokun, especially since he was a fourth-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft by the New Orleans Saints. In his career, he has 226 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception.

There will be a battle between Oladokun and Haener for QB3, yet the odds aren't in Oladokun's favor.
