Much has been said and written over the last four months about Kansas City Chiefs receiver Rashee Rice and how much power the pass catcher holds in the 2026 season, not just in how well the offense performs based on how he performs, but also the continuous hand slaps he's gotten for far bigger mistakes. As things currently stand, Rice is the most important pass catcher for the Chiefs, whose presence can swing the offense in either direction.
With that said, there is no doubt that if there are more off-the-field problems or Rice doesn't have the proper level of focus, the Chiefs can make a move in an instant. Rice is in the final year of his rookie contract and can easily be cut if he makes one final terrible decision that handicaps the organization.
The offensive line, tight end, and running back groups all appear to be solid and more than capable of giving the Chiefs the needed support. Parting ways with Rice would be unquestionably easy, and the Chiefs have all the picks and pieces needed to add an impact receiver ahead of this year's trade deadline.
Keep in mind that I'm in no way arguing that the Chiefs' best outcome this season is one where Rashee Rice leaves the team. If Kansas City is going to get back to earlier versions of a Patrick Mahomes-led offense, Rice being a big part of that and finally crossing the 1,000-yard threshold is mandatory.

In truth, all the pressure is on Rice to show himself capable of making responsible decisions and being able to stay on the field. There isn't a debate to be had about the ceiling of the pass catcher or the ability to be one of the league's elite options. The issue for Kansas City comes in their ability to trust Rice to stay on the field, further evidenced by the fact that Rice dealt with a knee injury while spending time incarcerated due to ignoring the rules of his probation.
Rice is an elite talent, but one that the Chiefs very much understand has proven to be incredibly inconsistent. With this in mind, it won't come as a surprise if Kansas City does opt to quickly add to the position or part ways with Rice if things don't go according to plan.
The urgency for Andy Reid and his team to get off to a hot start in Week 1 versus the Denver Broncos is well known. And Rice being a team player from the jump is a big part of that. There are potential answers on the market, and KC will find them if the star receiver gives even a hint of being a problem.
