Ever since Steve Spagnuolo took the reins of the Kansas City Chiefs' defense, they've hung their hat on their bend-don't-break defense and their strong secondary. Now, they face a tough challenge after an offseason of changes.
The secondary has gone through a major overhaul, with Bryan Cook, Jaylen Watson and Trent McDuffie no longer in the building. As such, bringing back a familiar face might not be the craziest idea.
It's been a couple of years since L'Jarius Sneed shut things down for the Chiefs, and he's by no means the same star he was when he joined the Tennessee Titans. That said, beggars can't be choosers, and the Chiefs might need him as much as he needs them.
The Chiefs should consider bringing back L'Jarius Sneed
The Chiefs have some major question marks in the secondary. They didn't seem to trust Nohl Williams as a rookie, though he's obviously quite talented; Kristian Fulton has had trouble staying healthy, and last but not least, the jury is also out on Kaiir Elam.
Sneed used to play in the slot before moving to the boundary in his final year in Kansas City. He's already familiar with Spagnuolo's system, and that type of positional versatility could also give them some insurance behind the unproven Jadon Canady and the recently signed Kader Kohou, who missed the entire 2025 season with an ACL injury.
Granted, a lot has transpired since Sneed was a difference-maker, but even after two down and injury-riddled seasons, he'd still be an upgrade over Chris Roland-Wallace and Kevin Knowles. At the very least, he could be given a chance to show what he's got in training camp, and they can move on from him if he doesn't look healthy or good. There's virtually no downside in giving him a one-year "prove it" deal, and the upside is already well-known.
On top of his injuries and his subpar play, Sneed had to deal with some well-documented issues off the field, but he's been cleared of any and all wrongdoing. That shouldn't stop the Chiefs from bringing him back if they think he can still be of help.
Sometimes, players just need to play in the right system or be in the right place to be at their best. The Chiefs couldn't afford to keep Sneed at his market value at the time, but now that they can get him at a discount, a return home might be just what Sneed needs to bring his career back from the ground.
