Well, we're roughly 25 games into the Josh Simmons experience, and it's starting to become painfully obvious that this isn't going to work out. No one seems to know what's going on, and the Kansas City Chiefs have turned this into a P.R. nightmare.
Simmons showed signs of promise when he was healthy enough to play during his rookie campaign, but there's no word on whether he'll play at all this season, maybe ever. Unfortunately, the show must go on, and it's time to find an alternative.
Considering that, the Chiefs should get Taylor Decker's agent on the phone. He wanted a steep salary, but maybe he can be talked into taking a discount to earn a new long-term deal and play for a Super Bowl contender.
The Chiefs must sign Taylor Decker amid the Josh Simmons fiasco
Decker asked for his release after a contract impasse with the Detroit Lions prior to this season. Not only did they hesitate to give him a new long-term deal, but they also wanted him to take a pay cut. Ultimately, he went unsigned in free agency.
That was somewhat surprising, given that he was by far the most decorated left tackle option on the market. While not a superstar, Decker is an experienced guy who plays mistake-free football and has Pro Bowl credentials.
The Chiefs have used undrafted rookie Khalil Benson at left tackle this season, and he's held his own pretty well. However, he's a natural right tackle, and he's slowly regressing after starting the season with a bang. It's not his fault.
This team would be better off moving him to his natural right tackle spot, having Jaylon Moore as a rotational swing tackle, and playing Decker on Patrick Mahomes' blindside. He should still be in game shape, and he may have lowered his financial aspirations by now.
The Seattle Seahawks' elite pass rush exposed the Chiefs' need for another left tackle. While they only sacked Patrick Mahomes once, they kept him under duress all night long, leading to one of the worst offensive outputs we've seen in a long time.
The Chiefs can't keep resting on their laurels. General manager Brett Veach must work the books and make some moves. This team desperately needs another playmaking wide receiver, and after watching how life can be against an elite defensive team, they clearly need a left tackle.
As for Simmons, it's impossible to know what's actually going on. Hopefully, everything's okay with him.... But Kansas City has to move on.
