One of my favorite prospects the Chiefs could look to target is a talented but undersized safety out of Oklahoma that will give you some serious flashbacks when you turn on the film. Billy Bowman comes in at just five feet nine inches and only 195 pounds, almost the exact size of former Chiefs star Tyrann Mathieu. But it is more than just the position and measurements, but the versatile and relentless play styles both players are known for are what make them special.
A former staple of the Chiefs' defense, Tyrann Mathieu brought an unmatched energy to the team, and his relentless mentality built everyone up. Mathieu was not just an energy guy, but his versatility to play anywhere on the field made him maybe the best safety in the NFL in his time with Kansas City. In his three years with the Chiefs, Mathieu logged 13 interceptions, 213 tackles, and 19 passes defended.
It is high praise to compare anyone to the Honey Badger, but when you watch Billy Bowman Jr. play, it's hard to compare him to anyone else. Bowman is all over the field for Oklahoma, lining up in the slot, over top, and even in the box as a hybrid linebacker in passing downs.
You would not expect a guy with Bowman's frame to be so effective at the line of scrimmage, especially as a tackler. But his aggressive mentality and relentlessness make him an incredibly valuable player and allow him to play all over the field. He also has coverage skills that allow him to match with slot corners and some tight ends, but he can be beaten by more physical pass catchers.
Mathieu was known in Kansas City for his ability to line up all over the field and make an impact in a variety of ways. Bowman has the potential to do the same, and when you watch the film for Oklahoma's defense, you can see what makes them similar. If Bowman can translate his college skills to the NFL, he will have an incredible NFL career.
I am a huge fan of Bowman, and I think he would be the perfect fit in the Chiefs defense. With several young safeties like Jaden Hicks, Bryan Cook and Chammari Connor, there may be room for Bowman to earn a job with the Chiefs. He will likely be available late day two or early on day three, and is a guy I would love to see in a Chiefs uniform in 2025 and beyond.
