The Kansas City Chiefs aren't going to have to wait long in the 2026 season to attempt to get a bit of revenge on the Denver Broncos. Schedule leaks revealed that the division rivals will be matched up for Week 1 of Monday Night Football on ESPN. Rarely has a Week 1 game carried so much importance for a team coming off getting swept by both the Broncos and the Los Angeles Chargers a season ago.

Kansas City will be given the stage for a statement game that puts Denver back in its place and reminds the league that the dynasty isn't dead just yet. The one caveat to this is worrying about Patrick Mahomes being thrown into such a big game in what potentially is his first time back on the field coming off an ACL injury.

It's the first serious injury of the quarterback's career, and has put his early-season status in question. While the goal is for the quarterback to be ready by early September, this does provide a bit of pause for Chiefs decision-makers, realizing the instant pressure that will be on Mahomes if he steps into the lineup.

Still, it is impossible to believe that Mahomes is going to miss the chance to beat a team he is 13-2 against in his storied career. Division domination has been a large piece of this, and there is no reason to view last season's failures as anything other than an outlier.

NFL schedule leak points to early-season chance for Chiefs divisional revenge

Denver doesn't share this outlook, clearly enjoying last season's rare wins over the Chiefs and appearing to have a high level of confidence. This makes it paramount that Week 1 is used as a tone setter to put the Broncos back on their heels and warn the rest of the division that the Chiefs are returning to their past dominance.

Rarely has the first game of the season been capable of carrying this weight, pointing to why the NFL featured the game on MNF. It is understood that Week 1 is a unique chance to craft storylines or continue last season's, and that is exactly what the schedule makers have done, putting the Broncos as the season opener.

Kansas City's only concern with this decision remains the health of their quarterback and whether or not Mahomes obsessive want to get back on the field serves in the best interest of his career and the team moving forward. Considering the importance of this game, it is difficult to believe it won't be the quarterback under center in Week 1, reminding the Broncos just how much he owns a team that has had one good season in the last decade.
