The Kansas City Chiefs lost a game they should've won in Week 5. Now, sitting on a 2-3 record and with a date with the red-hot Detroit Lions up next, the margin for error just got much slimmer for head coach Andy Reid and the rest of the Chiefs.
The running game hasn't been much of a factor in the first five weeks of the season, and with multiple teams keeping tabs on New York Jets running back Breece Hall, the Chiefs should look to pounce on a trade before it's too late. Although the trade deadline isn't until Nov. 4, Week 6 will be crucial to determining general manager Brett Veach's decision to chase Hall or not.
Week 6 Could Make or Break Breece Hall Trade for Chiefs
The Jets will host the Denver Broncos on Sunday, and they're 7-point home underdogs at the time of writing, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. Chances are they're going to fall to 0-6, and with the No. 1 pick on the horizon, the Jets will be better off parting ways with veterans and recouping more draft capital.
The Chiefs could choose to keep rolling with this core, but what if they lose to the Lions? Falling to 2-4 would certainly sound the alarms, and Veach will be under a lot of pressure to make some moves and give quarterback Patrick Mahomes more help.
Additionally, the Chiefs will face the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 7 before their bye week. That should give them more than enough time to get Hall nicely settled in on the offense before a crucial stretch in which they'll have to play the Buffalo Bills and Broncos on the road before heading back home to host the Indianapolis Colts.
After four weeks, Mahomes is the team's leading rusher with 190 rushing yards. Neither Kareem Hunt (164) nor Isiah Pacheco (163) has been a major factor, and rookie Brashard Smith hasn't gotten much of a run. The Chiefs have six rushing touchdowns, but three have come from Mahomes' legs. As a team, they average just 120.0 rushing yards per game, but the quarterback is responsible for a team-high 38.0 of them.
Hall, on the other hand, has been as dominant as usual this season. Despite the negative game script and his team's subpar offensive line, he's up to 351 rushing yards on 66 attempts, averaging 5.3 yards per carry. He also has 18 catches on 22 targets for 150 receiving yards, and given that he's eligible for a contract extension, he could be a long-term solution for this team.
If the star RB is indeed on the Chiefs' radar, it's safe to say fans will know if a trade is in the cards sooner rather than later.
